Day 10 of Crumpets 31 DC - Geometric Fail

Day 10 - Geometric.  I knew what I wanted to do.  I even knew the colors I wanted.  Dark plum, tan and "army" green.  I was inspired by Jen at The Nail Polish Project HEREWell, only go there if you want to realize how big my fail was.  This is what I ended up with.

If you think this is bad, wait till you see how well I rescued the earlier version.  By the time I got to this point, I gave up on the stamping part.  Let me show where it all fell apart.  Started with two coats of London Butter All Hail the Queen.  Good at this point, in fact beautiful.

Now is where started to fall apart.  I still have not invested in striping tape, don't ask me why, so instead I used scotch tape.  I put a triangle of tape in the middle of each nail and painted tips and cuticle with one of the following polishes.
  • Avon Touch of Taupe (Brown)
  • Sally Hanson Grey Area (Purple)
  • Revlon Spanish Moss
So far, not yet a total fail, but not for long.  See, I had little patience and lots of things to do today.  After waiting until the top and bottom colors were dry to the touch, I taped over them again with scotch tape, leaving a small border of the base color to show through, then painted the middle section with the appropriate color.

Looks fine, right?  Genius way to get around not having striping tape, right?  And then I removed the scotch tape.  This is what I was left with.

Total disaster!  Apparently I did not give the polish enough time to dry and the tape peeled off large chunks, as you can plainly see.  So I did what I could to salvage it.  After letting the middle portion dry, I filed the damaged portions smooth and freehand repainted.  Then I cleaned up the lines as best I could with acetone, threw on some topcoat and gave up on the idea of stamping.  Final look.

Not too bad a final look for what was a total fail, but I'm still not happy with it.  Got to invest in striping tape or develop more patience.  Oh well, we all have bad polish days.  Tomorrow will be better, I promise!  In the meantime, go check out some not failed geometric manis.

  1. Your rescue case came out lovely, you did a good job in the end. But yes, I am very familiar with disasters called scotch taping :D
P.S. Please consider removing the "prove you're not a robot" check.

    1. I'd love to. Do you know how to do it?

    2. YES! Sorry, but it's so annoying and I can't read the letters most of the times, they're always so blurry!! :)
You go to your "settings", then click on "post and comments", and then under "show word verification" click "no" and save changes. I think that's that :)

    3. Thanks soooo much! I hate it myself when I comment on other blogs. Most of the time I am just guessing what it is myself. Your instructions were perfect! Let me know if it worked.

  2. You can cut the selotape into thin strips, and stick them to the back of your hand so they lose some of the stickiness. Looks awesome though :)

    1. Tried this before but never felt I could get them thin and consistent enough. I'm just going to have to break down and get me some striping tape. Only problem is I can't find it in any local stores, so I am going to have to order online and pay for shipping.

  3. I can't tape a mani to save myself! lol I free hand better than I tape. Oh, well. You did a fine job of rescuing your nails! I have found a trimmed striper brush & a trimmed detail brush helpful in 'fixing' wonked lines & dribbles of polish where I don't want them. These skinny brushes make painting over booboos easier.

    1. I think I just had such high hopes for this so the fail hit harder than usual. Next time I will definitely freehand if I don't have striping tape.

    1. Thanks Melissa! It just didn't turn out how I pictured it. Definitely will try this color scheme again as it is one of my faves.
